Cheviot Hills Fine Foods, selling award winning venison, fine preserves and other good things, is based at the historic Cheviot Hills farm in Cheviot, North Canterbury, New Zealand. The farm was first named Cheviot Hills by John Caverhill in about 1845 and later became famous for its size in the hands of its second owner, William "Ready Money" Robinson. Robinson's death in 1889 eventually led to Cheviot Hills becoming the first of the large 19th century estates to be bought by the government for subdivision and resettlement.
Cheviot Hills has been owned by the Montgomery family for the past 50 years. The gentle rolling hills of the farm are ideal for deer, sheep, cattle and crops, and the views to the sea and to the mountains make it a very pleasant place to call home. And the judges of the 2012 Taste Farmers Market New Zealand awards certainly think that the farm produces beautifully tender venison - awarding us the winner of the "From the Butchery" section.
Cheviot Hills venison, sausages, salami, pies, preserves, sauces and other good things (such as baking using our preserves, soups, and hot venison in Rachel Scott ciabatta rolls) are available direct from us - see our mail order page. On Saturday mornings we alternate weekly between two local farmers markets: Waipara Valley in Amberley in front of the Hurunui District Council chambers on the main road in Amberley, and the Lyttelton market in London Street. Check our Facebook page for where we are each weekend. We can also supply restaurants, cafes and caterers.
Our selection of preserves, sauces and mustard are perfect to go with our venison and can also be used with other things. Cheviot Hills Rhubarb & Fig Jam is an excellent accompaniment to red meat such as our venison, goes very well with cheese and is also good simply on hot toast. This jam was runner-up in “From the Kitchen Bench” category of the 2011 Taste New Zealand Farmers Market Awards. Cheviot Hills Rhubarb & Elderflower Jam is a lovely lightly set jam delicious on hot toast or scones or with cheese. Cheviot Hills Blackberry & Elderberry jam is an autumnal jam that can be used as a base for a venison marinade or when deglazing a pan. It is also good as a breakfast jam. Cheviot Hills Damson Jam is a classic tart jam which has the intense damson flavour. Cheviot Hills Quince Marmalade combines local quinces and lemons to create an old fashioned preserve for cheese and toast. Cheviot Hills Very Merry Summer Jam is a lovely silky jam with a vibrant red colour and a deep fruit flavour. Our Classic Redcurrant Jelly is a traditional match with venison. Cheviot Hills Blueberry & Pinot Noir Sauce uses two classic combinations to go with venison, and the fruity flavour of Cheviot Hills Haw Sauce doubles as an excellent match for venison and as a salad dressing. Our classic redcurrant and blackcurrant jellies are simple but lovely to pair with venison, as is our new horseradish mustard. Blackcurrant and redcurrant syrups complete our selection.
See our preserves & sauces page for stockists or contact us for mail orders. All our preserves & sauces are hand made in small batches in Canterbury, New Zealand.
From time to time we also have other treats available, such as our delicious Cheviot Hills Elderflower Turkish Delight.
All our products other than the venison pies, baking and venison ciabatta rolls are gluten free. We usually have a gluten free roll option available at the market.
